Purpose – Goal – Key Deliverables

  • Purpose: purpose provides the reason for doing something or more specifically, for justifying the the desired results. The purpose statement should be linked to resolving the problem or exploiting the opportunity for which the project is undertaken.

  • Goal: A goal is a general statement describing the desired results

  • Key Deliverables: a deliverable is defined as any unique and verifiable product necessary to satisfy an objective. Deliverables may be tangible or intangible.

Notes

  • Objectives:  objectives represent concrete actions needed to achieve the goal. The PMBOK Guide includes “objectives” as elements to be defined in the Project Charter. We prefer to use a single “goal” in the Charter and leave the definition of objectives for the Project Management Plan. Reasoning: at this stage the project charter is about to be created, autorising the projet and nominating the project manager. It is not yet the right time to define objectives, i.e. to determine which concrete actions are needed to achieve the goal because the definition of those concrete actions needed might require a certain level of planning and of subject matter expertise that the project candidate has not yet acquired.

  • Deliverables: the PMBOK Guide defines a deliverable as an unique and verifiable product, result or capability to perform a service that is required to be produced to complete a process, phase, or project. We believe, this definition confuses deliverables and goals. We prefer a more restricted understanding of “deliverables” as products or artifacts to be produced by the project to achieve measurable objectives.
